Dr Pedram Zawarreza is a dedicated medical professional with a passion for serving diverse
communities, particularly the Farsi-speaking population in New Zealand. With more than 10
years of experience in family medicine and urgent care medicine, Dr Pedram Zawarreza has
consistently worked to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps in healthcare.
Born in Iran, Dr Pedram Zawarreza completed their medical degree at Shahid Beheshti
University. Since moving to New Zealand 16 years ago, he has been actively involved in
community health initiatives, focusing on improving healthcare access and outcomes for
immigrant populations.
Dr Pedram Zawarreza interests include cultural competence in healthcare, immigrant health
issues, preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine. He is fluent in Farsi, English, allowing
him to communicate effectively with a wide range of patients and colleagues.
As the newly appointed Director of Canterbury Kia Ora Academy’s health department, He
aims to develop programs that address the unique health needs of Farsi-speaking
communities while fostering cultural understanding and integration within New Zealand’s
healthcare system.
Goals for Farsi-speaking people in New Zealand (medical focus):

  1. Increase access to culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare services for Farsi-
    speaking individuals in New Zealand.
  2. Develop a comprehensive health education program in Farsi, covering topics such as
    preventive care, mental health, and navigation of the New Zealand healthcare system.
  3. Create a series of community health workshops conducted in Farsi, addressing common
    health concerns and promoting wellness practices.
  4. Implement a translation and interpretation service to ensure clear communication between
    Farsi-speaking patients and healthcare providers.
  5. Conduct research on the specific health needs and challenges faced by the Farsi-
    speaking community in New Zealand to inform policy and practice.
  6. Foster partnerships with Farsi-speaking community organizations to promote health
    awareness and facilitate access to medical services.
  7. Establish a support group for Farsi-speaking individuals dealing with chronic health
    conditions or mental health issues.
